Mobility Scooter/Chair Battery Types
Battery technology has changed considerably over the past few years. Today, mobility batteries especially Gel/AGM batteries, offer far more power but delivered in the same size package, they provide more consistent performance and have turned past concerns into myths. Maintenance
Gel/AGM batteries require no maintenance, other than keeping the terminals free of corrosion and making sure cable connections are secure. It is most important to ensure the battery is fully charged. How should a battery be stored?
When storing a wheelchair or scooter for more than two weeks, charge the batteries & then disconnect them. Always store your batteries fully charged. Check and recharge all batteries every 2 weeks.
Charging Mobility Scooters/Chairs
Active mobility vehicle users deep cycle their batteries daily. This stringent application requires a unique battery design that compromises initial capacity for the sake of long life. The most obvious indicator of a high quality deep cycle design is that the battery requires 15-20 cycles before it reaches full capacity. Deep cycle construction requires a break-in period to fully activate the battery.
Use the manufacturer's automatic charger for all routine charging
Do not use automotive or wet type chargers on Gel/AGM batteries. They will ruin your batteries quickly.
Never run your batteries completely flat.
How often should you charge?
Daily users - Charge daily. This applies to anyone who actually uses their equipment for community mobility outside the home
Occasional users - Charge your battery before an outing and always after active use
The cost of overnight charging is minimal and as long as a suitable charger is being used there is no reason to disconnect until the equipment is next used. Further information relating to your batteries should always be available from you supplier, and will be made available upon request.
Looking after your mobility vehicle properly will help you ensure trouble free motoring. However, just like a car, you should expect to incur some running expenses. These may include servicing, batteries and tyres and again as with cars the costs can quickly mount up.
